Muse – Uprising lyrics
Paranoia is in bloom,
The PR transmissions will
resume,
They'll try to push drugs that keep us all dumbed down,
And hope that we
will never see the truth around
(So come on)
Another promise, another scene
,
Another packaged lie to keep us trapped in greed,
And all the green belts wrapped around our minds,
And endless red tape to keep the truth confined
(So come on)

They will not
force us,
They will stop
degrading us,
They will not control us,
We will be victorious
(So come on)

Interchanging mind control,
Come let the revolution take it's toll,
If you could flick
a switch and open your third eye,
You'd see that
We should never be
afraid to die
(So come on)

Rise up and take
the power back,
It's time the
fat cats had a heart attack,
You know that their time's coming to an end,
We have to
unify and watch our flag ascend

They will not force us,
They will stop degrading us,
They will not control us,
We will be victorious
So come on

They will not force us,
They will stop degrading us,
They will not control us,
We will be victorious

Right wing? Are you kidding me. It is a song against greed and control and the degrading results of money in general. People are seriously so idiotic and self righteous sometimes. Wake up and realize that artists don't support a left or right, they support a vision. The vision he has is one where "Fat cats" get what is finally coming to them, when people who degrade others and control others and force others will finally be humbled. It has nothing to do with some liberal/conservative bs that is only meant to distract you from what is truly ruining society. The right and left wing are both trying to do one thing that has nothing to do with protecting their people--keep the establishment in power and maximize corporate profits. If the "RIGHT WING" wants to minimize government, why did they pass some of the most empowering executive acts in the history of usa's central gov in the past 10 years to create a homeland security that now spends more time researching "Homeland Insurgent Potentials" than terrorists abroad. Go figure only a country as stupid as ours would declare war on a concept. And by the way the average yearly deaths caused by the concept is less than the average yearly peanut allergy deaths. Wake up and realize you are being conditioned on a mass scale. Terror! Red! Did I scare you? More and more people are becoming suspicious of the government, but it is not about left or right, not about mccain or obama. They are all corrupt. Wake up please! It is our current system and attitude that continues a cycle of greed and inherent failure, do some real research other than watching tv and you will realize what this song is truly about. Until you can do something other than eat spoonfed Bullsht and vomit it back out, please stop voicing your regurgitated opinion.

Matt Bellamy said the lyrics were inspired by the G20 protests, which were in opposition to Bilderberg/Nwo style globalist elites. This would put them solidly in the libertarian camp, and opposed to both major us political parties. It means Bellamy probably wouldn't object if Glen Beck or Bill Maher used 'Uprising' as bump music for a tv show, but he probably would object to hear it as the theme of any Bush, Clinton, or Obama presidential campaign.

Choose your path in life. Stick to it. People all around you are always going to be F'd up, or just have their own way of thinking. The moment you understand that no single individual can possibly tell you how to live your life, or how to think, you can begin to think for yourself.
Lets see, Benjimen Baneker wasn't born rich, nor was, James Hetfield, Bill Gates, etc. The point is we have an opportunity to succeed in the usa to make our lives anything we want, if we are resourceful and independent.

What a great song to use for the Ron Paul Revolution! There are only One Fat Cats. No, not the capitalists, not the conservatives, not the bureaucrats and politicians, not the war-mongerers, not the liberals, greens, jews, zionists, gangsters or the cia. There are only One Fat Cats. They are so smart that they've been covering themselves up for a long time but the truth is rising. They are The Wall Street Fat Cats. They do not fit in any of the titles I listed above, only take their shape when convenient to confuse you. They print money out of thin air, enabling the wellfare/warfare state. Their weapon is the Federal Reserve and their fingerprints are all over this bloodied earth. They are the Root of All Evil.

Agreed. How far will people's ignorance continue?
Until now, mankind has been programmed to be slaves. We literally are in the Matrix but unless we can actually come together as a race we will never have enough power to overthrow them. The Zeitgeist movie explains everything to people who don't know what we're talking about, and I suggest you all watch it for the good of our race. The pyramid is everywhere.

Its about taking our lives back, not allowing our governments to cross the line of our freedoms. Are we really free when we are under constant stress with laws that encroach onto our personal space and preferences? Think people we are all controlled in one form or another to the benefit of big brother. Work your whole life to pay the government money so they can develope a new technology to scruitinize us further.

We aren't safe with the govt. They track us down and kill us. Can anybody even tell me why we are still in the middle east? We aren't fighting. This is like Vietnam. We are all bound to lose this "war". You know how you hear numbers of people dying? Those aren't the American soldiers. Those are the people that die in Afghanistan! Not us! We need to get them out of there, now. Things are going to keep getting worse and worse if we don't get them out soon. They will not control us! Obama keeps lying to us! What changes have we had that are good? Let me tell you. None. He has done nothing. I don't care if you disagree with me, we need to realize the truth though, because one of these days, it's going to be too late.

I suppose I should go more in depth--the drugs are probably addressing the current worldwide depression and mass subscription to antidepressants and other drugs of distraction, not to mention pretty much everyone including most of the right wing has a drinking problem or some sort of addiction. And why a worldwide depression? Because we are estranged from our natural human purpose by this nearly religious fixation with what we call money. This paper with imaginery value backed by nothing, of which 3% we actually have a paper form representative. 97% of money is online, on computer screens, 97% of money is A concept. And so is the debt it came from. Green belts would be money and red tape being the red scare, the scare tactics in general that say trust us and fear them. Don't question, be patriotic, the gov't is your best buddy. They are all puppets and you are unfortunately the puppet whos puppet master is a puppet. How sad.

It means, in a nutshell, Ron Paul 2012!
The Ron Paul Revolution is about ending the corporatist policies of both parties in Washington that reward only well politically connected corporations at the expense of the people, especially the Federal Reserve, rolling back the currently unlimited power of the Fedral government to the constraints of the constitution, removing force and coercion as the instruments of government interaction with the people, and restoring liberty. "They will not force us. Rise up and take your power back! "

Its funny you guys are arguing with each other but coming to the same point. Basically we need to have control back in our lives not the govt controlling our lives. So in what ever manner you mean it comes down to the fact that its either now or never we stand up for ourselves or let them control us. We can not wait around and hope someone else will do it bc by then it will be to late and no one can do it. We either act now or forever hold our peace!

It is a very political song. Matt Bellamy explained: 'Uprising', was kinda inspired by the G20 protests which took place a couple of years ago. He was watching it in London at the time it was going on, and liked the idea that people dressed up and had fun (a peaceful protest). And the whole economic crisis and mp scandal, where everyone felt they were being ripped off by the people they are supposed to trust. Red tape means causing delay, so they could be distracting the people to keep the truth hidden.
I think basically it is about going against the government, not letting them control you and having you own mind, opinions etc. The whole album is very much based on 1984 by George Orwell, which is a must read for Muse fans.
    I ♥ it so much.

This song is about the "Illuminatti" and the secrets they hold. Your "third eye" is your Pineal Gland which most things they push in our face is meant to create a wall around. This song is about ascension that's coming in 2012. Just my opinion but look up David Wilcock videos and see for yourself. The future is so bright but you can't climb up the hill unless you are aware you are at the bottom first.

I believe this song refers especially to right now. This song is basically telling about how we should not let the government control US. We need to open our eyes the government wants to control is, but we have the power to stop them! Let us unite and we will stop them. This song is a very good song and is an eye opener to people

Muse have revealed exclusively to mtv News the meaning behind their latest single Uprising.
Lead singer Matt Bellamy explained: -The lead single, 'Uprising', was kind of inspired by the G20 protests which took place last year. I was in London at the time and I saw it all going on outside where I live. "
He added: -I sort of found that whole protest quite inspiring really; just the idea that people just having a good time, putting together a peaceful protest but the police still do their best to make it become violent and I find that quite aggravating. So, that's what the song's about. "
The Muse front-man went on to explain further: -There was a whole economic crisis and the mp scandal which took place last year where everyone felt like they were being ripped off by the powers that be. "
-I sort of wanted to write a song that summed up that feeling like you've been done over by people you're supposed to trust. That's kind of where the song's coming from really. "

This song is about liberty. It's about starting a revolution against the corporatist practices of governments that oppress the people -- in the uk, America, and everywhere else. It's about recognizing how sucked in we have all been by the pr machines of the major political parties. It's about refusing to be trapped in the greed of using our vote as a tool to act aggressively against other people. In the usa it means Ron Paul Revolution! In the uk I'm not so sure who you've got fighting for your liberty. But rise up and take the power back!

I think this song is saying that corporations are manipulating human conciousness in order to obtain a monetary profit. I think the green belts thing means no new material can be built upon the already dumbed-down base of the human mind. And I completely agree, corporations are paying minimum wage to their employees, and saving that money to the fat cats at the top of the pile of money. But soon enough, that fat cat will be far too bloated to remain, and fall, sparking a landslide, and bringing the corporation with it. But as reliant on these corporations as we are, this would affect American lives. But we should not bury our roots so deeply into the soil of the corporations, but instead keep ourselves mobile and ready for change. Without that, we would tumble into the pit alongside the fat cats, lobbyists, and corrupt politicians.

    Justme64,.
Actually divabeat68 had it right the first time.
Green belts around our minds (minds = how we think) is describing how they try to control the way we think (the media) and the red tape of bureaucratic powers (which I believe includes our uneducational system), keeps the truth confined.
It's beautifully simple and self-explanatory, I love this song. Best one of 2010 so far, will be hard to top it.

@Divabeat68 I think you might've missed it, this is how I interpreted the lyrics:.
'Green belts wrapped around our minds' - this is a reference to money and how it controls us. ('green' => american dollar; 'belts wrapped around our mind' => imprisonment). Without money you can't live in this society and as such so many of us have gotten so used to fighting for survival (ie fighting to obtain money) that our minds are no longer open to other possibility outside of a life lived in the pursuit of money. We're nicely brainwashed and trapped in our own little mental prisons.
I agree with you on the red tape - national security/government/media institutions and bureaucracy to hide the truth.
Let me know what you guys think.

I appreciate that all real songs have a meaning that is both obscure and full of depth, but isn't it possible to simply enjoy the song without picking it apart and over-analyzing it? To listen, enjoy the music, move to the beat, memorize the lyrics, and move on? Just like it should be possible to submit your input without personally insulting everyone else who doesn't think quite like you do?

Hate to put you all out of your misery, but vocalist Matt Bellamy has already stated that this song was about the Economic Recession and the public's feelings against the government, particularly in the uk, as there was a huge expenses scandal at the time and there was a major lack of trust for out government. Which hasn't changed, I might add. Conspiracy theories are fine as long as you don't cross over into the pretentious Hollywood ones (deathmyfriend). As long as they're credible, they're fine. I'm a uk citizen, so I can't speak for Obama, but in my eyes, he's just a standard president. He hasn't done anything because he's nothing special. Ockham's Razor. It's that simple. Now stop acting like a movie character and start talking to girls.

You can apply these lyrics to any conspiracy theory you would like. If it had been written this week, it would apply to the incredibly invasive government that the unsuspecting people of the United States have voted into office. They know what is good for us and will ram it through Congress, while ignoring the perils around the world because it would be unreasonable to demand sacrifice from anyone but the taxpaying citizens of the us who have known too much success. Freedoms are slipping further and being consolidated in Washington while we watch helplessly from the sidelines and a smooth-tongued President is supported by ruthless partisans smearing those who disagree. Oh, they will indeed. Force us, control us and degrade us; and we may not emerge victorious - unless, of course, enough of us wake up.

I wholly agree with the comment by rumcho dated 10/29/09! I was very surprised to see someone else understands who the real controllers in America are. Yes, the Federal Reserve along with their supporters. Many in our government. Everyone should research past history and there they will see the answers of yes, the real enemies. Read about the truth of the fake money printed out of thin air. The Secret of Jekyll Island.

The meaning is quite literal. It is against the military-industrial-complex/illuminati/nwo/dark cabal/call it what you will, and all of the limits, lies, fear, and control they inflict on us. You must wake up to their plan of which we haved been warned for not only decades by the likes of jfk and abraham lincoln, but for millenia. Don't accept what is fed to you, especially by big-media. Study and you will see it is real. You will see the truth is stranger than fiction. We are not powerless to it. Revolution is taking its toll.

I think it means that authorities such as oppressive govts are only able to control us if we allow them which ties in with a lot of political theorists opinion that a government is only as powerful as their people will allow. With the economic depression in many european countries at the moment, I think this is a strong message as in ireland at least the govt are not dealing with it practicaly, rather like barge rats on a sinking ship, they seem to be selling off as many assets as they can in order to find a short term solution and tax the middle classes to the point of bankruptcy instead of finding realistic methods and strategies to help the country recover for the long term.

It is very relevant to the iranian post-election protests in 2009 where people wore green bands round their heads. The drugs can also refer to the iranian government which has a long history in not caring much about the prevalent use of drugs among young people because the government believes if young people become addicted they cannot protest against its regime. Fat cats can refer to some islamic clergies who don't work and are paid by the regime and they are really fat! The iranian government is known for hiding facts (truth confined) from its people and many statistics and reports are announced vice versa in governmental media. Revolution can refer to the term "green revolution of iran" which was used by some media in 2009.

This is definatly about the illuminati. But strangley enough, they seem to be the only artists out there that are against it. I watched one of there live gigs and he puts to finger across his eye to make two sides of a pyrimid, but then sticks his middle finger to complete it. Pretty much saying "stuff the illuminati". And we can also see some more evidence with his reference to the opening of the third eye.

Run before its too late. None of us are that dumb that we don't realise whats going on. Take for example muse, they were tricked into joining the illuminati, and boy did they regret it. They realised what was going on and try to warn us, but even then they could get hurt so they gave up their fame and fortune that was given to them by the illuminati and the band split up. Now has anyone else got anything to add? Because I really do want to find out more, just be careful when you are looking things up on the computer, if you don't have security they could be watching you. Lets just say men in black (fbi, csi, ect.) could turn up at yout door, all computers and laptops have ip numbers they can track you. Run now or believe these lies!

I think this song is about some political persons that thinks that they can tell there people how to life like he or she wants. But don't listen to does politicus. We are humeans and the different between humans and people is that we can make our one decisions and follow our won path. Some of the meanings above are right. It has alos a rebellish side in the song. That's why I think it's a good and a very treu song. But I think that there are also political persons who give you de chance to choose your own path, but those are very oncummon, whe've got to be clever about choosing our own path. And I think we al know that musicians fight with there instrument in stead of waepons, a specialy rockers.

Its a message for the people around the world. If you notice and are educated in old histories of the world, the third eye, is the pineal gland, look it up, the "fat cats" are the rich politicians, government. Its a message of a free world and true freedom for the inhabitants of this planet. Hidden meanings through the lyrics, if you know what I know, and some of you may, you should know exactly what its talking about. Kids, don't get confused, this isn't about being rebellious, its everyone, every living soul rising up to get rid of the governments of this world, take the world back, and watch our flag ascend.

I think it is pretty simple. Higher 'authority' figures in the government and in society keep truth from everyone and restrict creative thought to the point where people are just watching T. V> for hours a time and not thinking about their existence, and all they need to do is open theoir mind. But the government and other higher-ups supress this thinking, in fact the society has grown so used to it they even help them supress this type of existence in the first place.
It has gotten to the point where we are now living in a world where people don't even question why or how they got there. They mindlessly believe the spoonfed gobble gook fed to them.

In a world where their parents spent like drunken sailors and greed ruled, the kids are left in an autocratic world that has them on ateral with helicopter parents watching their every move. The police have more power and there is no money or opportunity because all of the resources are spent on the old. This song is totally anti-new world order and establishment. It is meant to wake people and it is telling us exactly what is going to go down to stop them. Major uprise is coming and the title says it. It is telling all of you brainwashed people to wake up. We will be victorious and defeat them in the end. I believe we will, but america and anyone else that is brainwashed must wake up to the truth. They must all leave the matrix and enter the real world. The revolution begins!

In my opinion this song is subliminally teaching us about the illuminati - a secret organisation that want to try rule the world, which many powerful perople know about such as the government, and are believed to brain wash -"interchanging mind control"- people by fitting subliminal messages into songs which are only discovered if you play them backwards, and example of this is 'run the world' by beyonce which talks about the devil and also the illuminati if you play the song backwards. The symbol for the illuminati is a pyramid with an eye inside it "third eye" which is shown in media programs such as the simpsons. Therefore, to me, this song is trying to warn people about the illuminati.

"paranoia is in bloom. The pr transmissions will resume. " this line is talking about how we accept new policies because we are paranoid. The pr transmissions (public relations transmissions) are all the kinds of media that "inform us" about terrorism, disease, crazy world leaders, etc. To scare us and condition us to accept policies to give up our rights so that we can feel safer. Of course they'll push their drugs and let health issues run rampant to keep us distracted and numb. "green belts wrapped around our minds" - a "green belt" is an area of land on which it is prohibited to continue building on. It's wrapped around our minds, making us narrow-minded and unable to build or expand on what we know. "red tape to keep the truth confined. " - "red tape" is a well-known term for excessive bureaucratic regulation (which makes it easy to hide things from us.) understand the first verse and the rest falls into place. I want to shake matt bellamy's hand for these simple yet meaningful lyrics.

I love this song. We need to speak out and up regarding the issues of this world because the greed of the powerful men in control is taking over our rights. Muse is in no way detached from greed. This song is about itself, just a trend well played out - we starve, we get angry, we listen to whatever sells us the feeling. Its just what you want to hear packaged the same way as government. We are the system, we are the government, we want to control and be controlled, and we want someone to blame - nobody wants the red pill or the responsibility that comes with it. We will be victorious? We'll always be slaves because our true master is possessions - "freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose" - now that's the truth.

The song is about rising against the government, just watch the video for goodness sake. The teddy bares represent something that looks cute and caring (government) while if you look deeper, there evil and controlling. "they'll try to push drugs to keep us all dumbed down" refers to the fluoridation of our water, which is scientifically proven to lower people's iq levels. Government has been against us for years, they want a smaller population so we're easier to control. It pisses me off knowing how small a percentage of the population know whats going on. I have found all of this out and I am still I'm high school.

This song is about corruption, but on a larger scale than your thinking. This song is about the truth the're hiding from you. This world will do anything to keep you from the truth. Please read and understand what is being said here, drugs, greed, red tape, mind control. This world is ran by a the biggest lair of them all. If you're a christian and you study the books in the bible you'll understand this song completely. If you don't see it ask god for more wisdom an knowledge, you wont be disappointed. Ask your self this, what belief is absolutely not tolerated anywhere? The christian belief! The 19 century has had the largest number of assassinations of christians than any other century. What is their belief? Jesus and the ten commandments. Why are they afraid this? Could this be the truth they don't want you to practice? Just think if everyone believed and practiced what jesus was telling us, this world would run like clockwork and will after this earth age.
God has made his decision, you decide!
Remember, don't let the world decide for you.
One more thing, if you start dissecting all the songs you like, you'll notice allot more of what the world wants you to hear instead of what you're listening to hear. Good luck and remember there is a dead line and you shouldn't underestimate what god will do to us. God, please bless anyone seeking the truth! If I offended anyone, that's not my problem. At least I didn't lie or deceive you.

This song was a battle cry for me as I fought breast cancer. I would put in my ear phones at every 6 hour chemo treatment and listen to this. I substituted 'cancer' for 'they'. Very empowering! There were more songs in my 'battle list', but I always started and ended with this. That's what I love about lyrics, there always seems to be some way to fit the meaning into your life.

"If you could flick a switch and open your third eye..."
The "third eye" is an esoteric concept that refers to the gate that leads within to inner realms and spaces of higher consciousness. Look it up on wikipedia. This is exactly what Muse is referring to.
This song is all about the supposed ascension of consciousness that new agers believe that we (mankind) will experience shortly.

I think this song stands for a lot of abstract concepts, depending what perspectove you are listening at. Sure it could be about rebellion, about the government and fighting back, for those way-too patriotic people. But it's much more than fightiing back or rebellion: it's freeing yourself of people's ideas and minds, no longer listening to the "fat cats" of the world or finally realizing the "packaged lies that keep us trapped in greed". It's basically saying wake up, see the horror, the greed, the evil-spurred emotional acts, and do something about it! Free yourself, others, and the world from the slow, brainwashed feel that slowly grips the world. Like freakycat125 said before, open your third eye.

Agreed w (Most) of the consensus here - except the guy who thinks 3rd eye opening is somehow demonic (got a good laugh on that one!). I met mr. Timothy Leary once, through two friends w a bookstore and he spoke in Forth Worth after, got a couple of mins w him after - the one thing I remembered, asking about something in one of his books, was his saying/elaborating on what he'd written and what I'd commented on - that the new 'war' was not between superpowers, not between governments for the most part, and yes between corprations - but more than that - the battlefield itself was chaning - the new battlefield was for control of our minds, our beliefs. I think Muse's lyricist would agree with that sentiment, this is a song about seeing truth and using/liberating one's own mind.

Everyone’ s programmed to seek out fortune and success so they will lose sight of what’ s really important such as the preservation of future life on this planet. To know the full truth would devastate corporations such as the ones using fossil fuels because we’ ve stopped being dependent on this energy source for over 50 years. The fear of death is worth billions to businesses like pharmaceutical companies and the military war machine which they hide from the population through endless red tape. They force us by creating rules that benefit the wealthy, under grade us to be superficial so we buy products to be more beautiful and popular, they control us through multiple forms of media that literally tell you how to live your life, but being victorious is only possible if you don’ t follow society’ s rules which are mostly guided by the rich and powerful. If people stopped consuming what they don’ t need and preserved life rather than obsessing over what they do or do not have then the fat cats really would have a heart attack. It would surly bring them all to an end because it would render them useless to our survival. I don’ t know if this is what the song really means by the artist who wrote it but it is my interpretation.

I think they're talking about how we are sooo blind to the government's actions and how we overlook the things that they do because they occupy with things that don't really matter. They feed us lies and control us. I think its a way to say, "HEY! Stop eating up everything that people tell you and look the hell around for yourself!" Dropping the whole mind control thing ya know. Jeeez I love muse! Lol Their song Take a Bow is similar in meaning. The corrupt government. Like, we as The People have to stand up and take our power back. Ya know, if the government was truly made for 'The People' and by 'The People'. Why are we letting these "leaders" take away our freedoms and why are we letting them sway our free thinking? I like music that makes you think. And still sounds spectacular in the process. ^_^.

I think this song, as well as all others on this album, is based on the book 1984 by George Orwell. This whole song describes the government try to take over every aspect of the citizens lives. The symobl of the green belt is actually from the Green Belt Policy in the uk, which was an attempt to stop expansion. This totally makes sense now because the government is try to stop "expanding" our thoughts and mind. And in the book he talks about a totalitarian government. The significance of the red tape is the old tradition of putting read tape on important documents. But today it is considered to be an unnecessary document if it has red tape on it. Another symbol is the fat cat, which is considered to be a wealthy person who "buys his power" and corrupts the government. This is just what I have found. I had to evaluate this song for a project.

No, haarp runs on the conspiracy themes that many Muse songs are about. In their early days, Matt Bellamy was a poor lyricist who found it hard to explain his personal feelings, so he wrote about conspiracy theories, which is how he got into that interest. Muse are a little more mature now, and while most of their content is conspiracy-based, this song in particular was about the recession, and if you don't believe me, look up anything Muse have said about this song.
In short, it's about public mistrust of government. It was written in a time when the British public didn't trust their government. Enough said.

Look up strange russian clouds and spiral in sky. Songs about a recession hahahaha pls give me a break if that's what the lead singer said it was about. Well like that old saying its hard to fill a cup which is already filled. Half you guys arent paying attention, let alone hearing some of the sad truth that's not in your spoon fed media.

It's political, but as citizen's of the world we have to see there is nothing new under the sun. Historically, it has always been the same, just a few of the players have changed. Once it was the monarchies and the aristocratic and church rule and the working peasant. Unfairness, unrest, unstable, and upset, no longer just in particular regions, or in different frames of time, but world wide and continual. Now it is the 1% vs the 99%. History will keep repeating itself, until we learn or it becomes too late. For all of our sakes, I hope we learn and reverse it. In reality it is 99% vs 1 %. Take back your power and change history for the good.

Even better. Found this on mtv. Co. Uk.
*Muse have revealed exclusively to mtv News the meaning behind their latest single Uprising.
Lead singer Matt Bellamy explained: "The lead single, 'Uprising', was kind of inspired by the G20 protests which took place last year. I was in London at the time and I saw it all going on outside where I live."
He added: "I sort of found that whole protest quite inspiring really; just the idea that people just having a good time, putting together a peaceful protest but the police still do their best to make it become violent and I find that quite aggravating. So, that's what the song's about."
The Muse front-man went on to explain further: "There was a whole economic crisis and the MP scandal which took place last year where everyone felt like they were being ripped off by the powers that be."
"I sort of wanted to write a song that summed up that feeling like you've been done over by people you're supposed to trust. That's kind of where the song's coming from really."*

*So when you say that both republicans and democrats have made big moves to deregulate the American economy, I agree. In this way, they are both adhering to the liberal philosophy (liberal in the sense of the free market) that the market runs best when it is left to its own devices. *
I nearly choked reading this. Laissez faire does not equal liberal philosphy. The only reason Clinton allowed deregulation was because the "fat cats" were writing a pretty great chapter in the history books for him.
Re tommholly: Any song with the lyrics "fat cats" cannot be anti-communist/Marxist (I will not put socialism with that as they may be similar in economic theory, they are not similar in means. Read some Marx and then try to equate it to socialism). If anything this song is about taking back control and favors Marxism: "Workers of the world unite and break your chains."

Muse wrote this song in response to the Global Financial Crisis.
It is all about how we are being sold materialism, to our own detriment. By convincing us that consumerism and continually growing material wealth is essential, we hand control of our lives to large corporations and banks.
It has absolutely nothing to do with opposition to socialism! 'Red tape' is a familiar way of saying 'beaurocracy' or 'regulation'.
So the 'green belts wrapped around own minds' means that we have been convinced that growing material wealth is the only way (green belt referring to liberalism). The 'red tape to keep the truth confined' refers to the control government has over us.
Linking these two sentences together, Muse is saying the government is doing the bidding of large corporations with their single minded focus on economic growth. The gfc is testament that pure liberalism is not only unachievable, but also highly unstable and undesirable.
We should not be allowing hedge funds and insurance companies to gamble our savings or banks to sell loans to people they know will never be able to repay them. We need to refocus on living standards and our environment, and sustainable ways of living.
To finish, Muse is calling for us not be conned, to 'rise up and take the power back'. We need to get rid of those who seek only to make money to the detriment of everything else, or as they say 'its time the fat cats had a heart attack'.
Muse does have other songs against communism and fascism (on the same album), but that is not what this song is about!

I have to concur with chobbuk and ring of power on this one. Muse seem very much aware and concerned with the agenda "they" are pushing, which in my humble opinion, seems to be the consolidating of power via a one world government as alluded to in another Muse song, United States of Eurasia.
Now, I am by no means a "conspiracy theorist." In fact, I'm very much wary of anyone who claims to know "the truth," conspiracy theorist or otherwise. But it's getting harder and harder to ignore this s*t, especially when its being referenced in music more frequently and overtly (check out nwo references in the music of jay z, velvet revolver, soundgarden, Tupac, and too many others to mention). They may just be playing with the concept in a tongue in cheek way, but in most cases it comes off seriously. This is just an observation, but I'd love to hear your guys' take on this. How real is this "conspiracy"?

That song always drums up those deepest inner feelings hiding in the depths of my noggin. Not sure if its the build up and climax or the clever lyrics. Likely both. But I guess in its most simple form I find it a truly dramatic presentation. In typical muse "mystique". Of the use of fear and desire to manipulate the masses or the individual depending on the source. And a call to all to see the truth beyond. Or more accurately depicted. Within. Regardless of the manipulator. Of course I think your thoughts are right on with respect to the literal sense of the manipulator(s). Or possibly the power conglomerate as a whole, sitting at the top with their game controllers manipulating the masses with its media game console and fanatical necessity for power and victory. I do my best to be the fly on the wall and observe with the truest of objective intentions. An intersting game. This life.

I am encouraged to see and read these postive perspectives on the meaning of this song but, also the realization of the total disfunction of our current social. Political and environmental society. My favorite word uesd in the lyrics are "THEY" because it is "THEY" the corporatetocracy,
who have made a major mess of our planet. I am continuing my research into the realities of the truth concerning the future of this planet and our society as a whole. The "Third Eye" will set you free if you choose to accept it with a clear and open mind. I am going to fight for our human rights not for me but, for my family and their families. Freakycat125 from April 21st is so incredibly profound! I 100% agree - so much so that I actually copy and pasted what you said into a word document to share. We all need a third eye! It's not about good vs. Bad, black vs. White, right vs. Wrong, conservative vs. Liberal, Christianity vs. Islam, and so on. Only the third eye can see that. It is freedom of the mind, freedom to love and receive love, forgive, accept, give grace. Our enemy is not people. Our enemy is the fear, hatred and greed that entrap people. They need to be set free too, not hated.

First off muse uprising is an Awesome song, but yeah most songs are pretty cool, but uprising points some stuff that I think the world should listen to---that we are killing earth and each-other, not only that but plants and animals, clearing trees is most of the promblem. But there is also oil and gasoline and pollution and everything! Muse is pointing out something very important--what we are doing.

I believe this song reffers to greater things than the current political status in America. It talks about them who have the money and the power to control all the people of all the world and the governments of all world too. They are the ones that have concentrate all the wealth and until now they controlled our fate by numbing us in several ways for example drugs, consuming etc. In order to supress our power for resistance, to put it to sleep in a way. The artist believes also, in my opinion, that their greediness wil be punished, that people are awakening and the revolution will come soon.
I like this song because I believe its a prophecy to what is going to happen in a few years from now, and I feel it gives to our generation who has from many people been condemmed for ignorance and political awareness, a great role that of the beginer of a new time, of a real revolution.
I am sorry if I am not being understood in some points. I am Greek and my English are not so good.

Vet2be1973 I agree with you, I just think we have different ways of defining liberal, and there are in fact a couple of different ways that it is used.
'Liberal' as it is used in American politics refers to "having political or social views favoring reform and progress"
However it has a different meaning when talking about the free market. A 'purely liberal' state (which can never truly exist) is where there are no government controls I. E. No regulations, laws, police etc.
On the end of the scale, an 'authoritarian' state dictates everything people are allowed to do, with resticting regulations and laws. In an authoritarian state, complete power lies in the controlling state.
Most societies over the last hundred years have moved to somewhere in the middle I. E. A free market, but with police, transport, ports, schools, banks, laws, etc. Provided by the state.
So when you say that both republicans and democrats have made big moves to deregulate the American economy, I agree. In this way, they are both adhering to the liberal philosophy (liberal in the sense of the free market) that the market runs best when it is left to its own devices. The gfc is evidence that excessive deregulation, while providing large economic growth over the short term, will not lead to stable or equitable societies.
If 'green belts' were referring to money, we would assume that is American money. (A quick google search indicates that the pound comes in a variety of colours, and Muse are a British band.) Perhaps they are referring to how we blindly adhere to the us idea of exponential economic growth and deregulation?

Really, the green belts wrapped around our minds refers to liberalism? Has that explanation come from Muse themselves, or is it more propaganda by the corporate prostitutes and patsies? Anyone who isn't delusional or lying will tell you that the global financial crisis was a result of republican and Clintonian deregulation. A more credible explanation is that "green belts wrapped around our minds" refers to the color of money -- money being what drives, controls, and dominates the thinking of the vast majority of people. Short term greed is how people think, and has been leading and will ultimately lead to this country's destruction, courtesy of corporate America and the fools that believe their lies.

What an amazing song! Its a direct attack on the evils of Marxist ideologies like Socialism and Communism (red tape), the progerssive liberal enviromental Cult (green belts wrapped around our minds), and the ways they force this stuff down our throats (Pr transmission will resume).
People like Chrispy (a post 2 pages back from December 29, 2009) asks people to vote for Barrack Obama as a start to something better? Lol Liberals like him have adopted Marxist Socialsim ideals which are the leading cause of the problems we have with society throughout the world. Marxism, wherever it has been tried in the world, has been a horrible failure. Any place a Marxist inspired program in any government (including the us) has been attempted it has created some of the worst problems of that government. (i. E. Social Security, Medicare, Medicade, wastefull grant money given to propoganda election stealing organisations like acorn) This song is a warning to people like Obama and the ideology he represents that the world will not be forced into the oppressions of Socialism.
Speaking of pr transmissions will continue. I like how Chrispy tried propping up the Communist dictatorship in Cuba by claiming they have sent more Doctors to poor contries than the un. I don't know what's a bigger lie, that or when he said that Cuba is better for it's people than the us or Britain? Lol Look up everything these people say and you'll find they continually repeat lies in an attempt to convert it to fact.

Merry christmas season! Season of goodwill to all men! The recent posts have all made good points but why so much aggression? It is a song, no need to get het up about it. The capitals, insults and misspellings weaken your arguments. Personally I agree with chuckletto, it is against politicians, and their control of us. Therefore it could be seen as against socialism; however the "fat cats", sounds more capitalist because socialist leaders aren't so much called that, although they have special allowances. So in conclusion it is simply anti government, neither one way nor another.

I like the idea of Muse being libertarian and all. But use of the world revolution, unify and the talk of a flag ascending in the lyrics, gives me a more nuanced picture of their political views expressed in this song. The point with libertarians is that they do not believe in the unification of a country. And even though some of Americas grand fathers called themselves libertarians they were more liberalists, since libertarians does not believe in any state.
Besides I have a hard time defining "United states of Eurasia" as ironic or simply straightforward if the latter, then Muse is by no means libertarians. But it is very interesting, and what interests me the most about Muse and their new album is their extremely political focus.
Besidese you say in your post that people flocked the usa because of freedom. That is correct. But the freedom of usa was also one of the reasons that, your ecnomy is crushed and that we have a financial world crisis. Your freedom - in my oppinion reffered to by muse as the "fat cats", and the packaged lies to keep us (the people) trapped in greed - is also a problem. So calling Muse libertarians is in my oppinion a very rushed conclusion.
Btw - before you start shouting and coursing people disagreeing with you just remeber that oppinions on the United states of America a very diverse and not everyone like you see it as the greatest "IDEA" in the world.
    Thanks.

Muse is right. We, as people, (humans aren't the only thing out there) should respect the rules of life. We've been breaking them, as far as I'm concerned, with damaging the ozone layer, pollution, and not only that. We are killing eachother. Human against human, brother against brother. We need to look the foe in the eye. If we don't do anything to save Mother Earth, we will be wiped out of existence. No people. No animals. No plants. No life.

I cannot stand walking zombies such as you. Did you even read my post. The last post I made talked about one world government. That's exactly what United State of Eurasia is about, and I already pointed it out in an earlier post.
And, what the hell does religion have to do with anything!? I never once mentioned religion. Many libertarians are athiest, there is no problem with that at all. You are so lame just stereotyping that anyone who believes in capitalism is religious? That makes not sense at all, use your brain dumbass.
Oh, and by the way, we are not living under capitalism, we are living under progressivism and in an over-Regulated totalitarian state. Both the usa & europe. These are the things that brought about our destruction, overregulation. I already pointed all this out in earlier threads, can you even read? Why is it so hard for people like you to believe in freedom, why do you insist on pointing A gun to peoples head and telling them what to do? Just let people be free.

Quite honestly, I've seen a lot of comments referring to the American government. While this is a good example of the song; it's a government that could have been great at one point, but it fell to serious corruption, this song goes much further than that. Take a look around- this song can be applied everywhere, from governments to buisiness to social classes. The people at the top now are doing nothing but sticking their feet in the faces of the people below them, trying to turn them into their mindless dolls to jump and dance to their every whim. The ones at top keep the others blinded with their lies of saying they do what they do "because they care", while if you trulely look at it, it only benefits them. However, the artist sees that they are going to fall soon, whether it be from the "ascension", or from them gaining too much power, or whatever, and is saying that everyone needs to realize that this is going on, and to prepare for the moment they fall to reclaim equality and freedom amongst each other again.
Also, sorry for the freakin' novel of a comment I left, everyone, I've been thinking on this song for a while since I've heard it. It's one of my favorites; deep meaning or not, it's a really good song.

Idk! I sort of think this song means that they will not give into peer pressure and even if like rich people allows all these drugs and alcohol to give it to us, we will never give in to it! That they will be the fat cats, eventually, who die from it and the alcohol will not control us. Idk it's hard to explain, and that they don't see that they are dying from it, because they are too controlled by it.

The overall meaning of the song is not exactly clear. I accept that you are just as likely as right as anyone els who has dropped a post, parroting an ideal with talking points.
All of our viewpoints seem to have affected how we have interpreted the song. Though I may have come off rather offensive, you deserve more respect, considering the posts of yours I didn't read.
Some rather confusing points to the song easily throw most listeners all around.
Fat cats- is this a term to be applied to someone making money in total excess(usually underservedly)--- honestly, as an acquaintance of many engineers I can say that most engineers make far less than most blood sucking businessman who do what-- run s*t--- that's bs! Who is more valuable.
Or is the term applied to the politicians who are seemingly and in most cases actually are filled with selfish pursuits.
    "interchanging mind control,
come let the revolution take its toll".
All of these lines could be interpreted and twisted to back either side of the muse as a capitalist lover or as simply a person who despises the power hold of a politician.
Frankly, I am far more inclined to think that muse is not laying out a political view but a caricaturization of us politics.

Klmx1985's world view is one of victimhood and fear. Fear of failure. This whole proletariat victimhood "workers of the world unite" attitude is just such a defeated, victim way of thinking. It is quite pathetic, really. Klmx1985, are all your problems due to the mean bourgeoisie who reached down and found a pair of nuts, and went out and found success on their own? It seems that's what you think. Because of your fear of failure, you would rather be a p***y sitting in the fetal position on your couch at home and ask the government to steal from "all those successful people" who have just made your pathetic life so miserable, and give that money to your sorry a$$. That's socialism my friend, and it's pathetic losers like you that are tearing down this world and destroying all semblence of freedom in the process. I have one peice of advice for you: Go grow a pair and succeed on your own, nobody is forcing you to take that sh$tty "proletariat" job that you are whining about. Go grow a pair and quit asking the government to point a gun at and steal from the successful people in order to appease losers like you. Pathetic.

It is so obvious. I can't believe you think it is for it, and that you are for it. You should go read George Orwell's 1984 and see if you still feel the same way. You leave me so utterly mortified, what's it to you. Who 's music leads your band? A world of involving nothing but money and the filthy sexand corruption of the powerful are clearly what make them any better. You speak of growing nuts and moving up in society, I will tell you that the narrowness o fyour idealism is rather prone to falling like a sparrow. You just might be overlooking the age group of those who listen to this group. Honestly, pal do you feel that intelligent telling people off on a lyric site. By the way, in case you re thinking that I must be some rather uneducated bumbling idiot I must let you know I lost my mother at a young age and was fortunate enough to be educated at a decent university. However where I was raised, I can tell you america is still not as free as it is claimed to be. If you disagree, my friend, I can only attribute that to your lack of travelling rough neighborhoods. Check out paterson nj and tell me how many people born into that area have the same effing opportunity of most people who supposedly worked hard. I don't see how you find your reasoning, so convincingly. Another thing, if you are indeed a bourgeouis ball sack I see you so freightened of a world where you are castrated and alienated. Well, that is just a dirty assumption. If false, then that would explain voicing yourself here. Into forevermore, your opinion is respectable although your very unamerican response to free thought and spech is very uncommendable.
And lastly, you see nearly too much black and white. Government can be a useful tool, though globalization has run its course and I doubt communism /socialism(total govt control of everything) would fair well.
Hit the library, please, your lack of understanding is insulting.

Yeah, it does sound like the 'Right Wing' has a new anthem! As a 'Right Winger' myself this song makes me think about what the 'Left Wing' tries to do. Propagandizing a 'hope and change' mantra. Then raising taxes and trying to invade and control every conceivable part of society it can, making anything it touches function inefficiently, if it functions any more at all. The 'Right Wing' and it's ideals have created the happiest, wealthiest, most successful nation the world has ever known in just a few hundred years (argue about happiness all you want, but, as measurable as it is, the us has been deemed to have the 'happiest' populous). The 'Right Wing' wants to minimize government, lower taxes, let businesses thrive by no longer wasting their time and money, thus creating jobs, security, opportunity, and happiness. The 'Right Wing' wants to get the government out of our lives and reverse what the 'Left Wing' has already harmed. From health care to huge complicated and often morally-flavored taxes to punishing hard work and rewarding laziness. All 'Left Wing' concepts that simply fail. Furthermore, who 'pushes drugs'. And creates 'red tape'. Liberals. Known for their hippie 'pills make it all better' coping mechanisms and unwillingness to face reality and deal with human nature as it is instead of embracing it and making it work for us.
