Paramore – Turn It Off lyrics
{Verse 1}
I scraped my knees when I was praying
And found a demon in my safest haven, seems like
It's getting harder to believe in anything
Than just to get lost in all my selfish thoughts
I wanna know what it'd be like
To find perfection in my pride
To see nothing in the light
Or turn it off in all my spite
In all my spite i'll turn it off

{Chorus}
And the worst part is
Before it gets any better
We're headed for a cliff
And in the free fall I will realize
I'm better off when I hit the bottom

{Verse 2}
The tragedy, it seems unending
I'm watching everyone I looked up to break and bending
We're taking shortcuts and false solutions
Just to come out the hero
Well I can see behind the curtain (I can see, yeah yeah)
The wheels are cranking, turning,
It's all wrong the way we're working
Towards a goal, that's nonexistent
It's nonexistent, but we just keep believing

{Chorus}
And the worst part is
Before it gets any better
We're headed for a cliff
And in the free fall I will realize
I'm better off when I hit the bottom

{Bridge}
I wanna know what it'd be like
To find perfection in my pride
To see nothing in the light
And turn it off in all my spite
In all my spite i'll turn it off
Just turn it off again

{Chorus}
And the worst part is
Before it gets any better
We're headed for a cliff
And in the free fall I will realize
I'm better off when I hit the bottom

    If you preordered the Deluxe Edition of bne like I did it comes with a copy of hayley williams' journal that she wrote the lyrics for every song and the meaning behind each of them. This is what she wrote in accordance to the meaning od Turn It Off,
    "In accordance with 'Playing God' this song is an emotional result. How i feel when i think about the stupidity displayed by so called Christians abd it seems that people who dont fall back on faith seem to have their life figured out. Or at least it works fairly smoothly on the surface. What i've found is there is beauty in 'Figuring Out'...I hope i never have life figured out for myself. I want no one in a constant state of learning and growing and i hope god can always show me from the bottom there are more ways to Look Up." -H. Williams.
    There it is, the meaning.

    I forgot the chorus. To me that talks about the fact that I know if I wake up the day after felling worse than the day before that it might just be due to the fact it has to get worse before it gets better- a bit like when someone dies, you have to mourn for you to carry on resonably normal (depending on who has died).
    And then when everything has settled down. Even if the relationship between me and the person isn't the same at least I know where I stand and can move on.
    And I don't mean an 'in love' relationship.

    Although there is likely to be a specific meaning and story behind this song when it was written, I don't think it matters. The gist of the metaphor is that things only get worse before their better, however sometimes it isn't always worth the risk when things get worse. This metaphor can be connected to religion, love, or any situation really. But what matters is what it means to you.

    Hailey is talking about the huge change in our beliefs and religion. She speaks of seeing people she looked up to break and bend to other's wills. To me this song reflects on how today we view things at a more personal and selfish level. She rounds it off by saying that, before we realise our mistakes in seeing the world as we do, it'll be too late. We've already ruined too much to save ourselves.

    I know hayley said this is a god song but, I have to agree it really does fit questioning god and giving in to pride and turning off the light. And being better off with just giving it all up.
    Read threw it with the anti god idea and youll see that it fits it perfectly. Actually more perfectly than the intended meaning of struggling with life and beileving more at the bottom, and fake christians.

    I personally don't believe in God. It's just not my religion. (I am not saying He doesn't exist, I'm just saying I don't believe in it!) And yet, I find this song to have a powerful meaning as well. I see the song as about the struggles in life and how sometimes you just want to turn it off or just be done with it. It has a powerful message, as with all of their songs. Sometimes, look beyond the fact they mention God in the song and look at the true meaning.

    I think this song is about the economy. "and the worst part is, before it gets any better, we're headed for a cliff" refers to the fact that the debt bubble has to pop and cause a lot of financial pain for a lot of people before things can change for the better. That and the line about people behind the curtain, coming up with shortcuts and half solutions just to come out the hero. That reminds of our so-called leaders, behind closed doors, trying be a hero by coming up with half solutions to prevent the pain that in inevitably headed our way.

    Okay the first verse makes you think it's anti-god but what Haley is saying is when it gets hard it's hard to believe and listen to the right voices and the things you need to hear rather then what seems so easy to us. She's telling us it's hard and talking about her selfish thoughts in the first verse when she goes off and says turn it off she means she needs to block out those bad thoughts and focus on what's true means turn off her thoughts. When she says shes better off when she hits the bottom she's right cuz she's stating that the hard things makes her a stronger person.

    I love this! Its about God! Hayley Williams is such a great person and this song can mean a lot! Read it and understand that it can be hard to follow God when all of your pride gets in the way you wish there was a way to have a world of your own thoughts and opinions and no need to stop having faith and that instead of climbing your own hill to the top your better off at the bottom.

    This isn't about what the song means to the band/ hayley it's about how I relate to it.
    I scraped my knees while I was praying and found a deamon in my safest haven.
    This talks about how all the people I thought I could trust seem to e showing me up.
    Its getting harder to believe in anything- just as it's said (it's harder to believe what people say because it seems like everything is a lie).
    Than just to get lost in all my selfish thoughts- basically to just sit around and dwell over the fact that I was sad and fed up about the whole matter.
    I wanna know what it be like, to find perfection in my pride to see nothing in the light and turn it off in all my spite, in all my spite ill turn it off.
    I sometimes want to see how things would be if I wasn't influencing the situation, if I didn't have an impact on people and wish that it wouldn't be so easy for me to get offended/ pick up on their faults or visa versa.
    The tragedy it seems unending.
    Exactly what it says, not feeling like you can get out of how hurt you feel at being lied to or betrayed.
    I'm watching everyone I looked up to breaking bending.
    While all these things are going on I take a step back and realise my behaviour is hurting people I love,.
    We're taking short cuts and faulse soloutions just to come out the hero.
    I want to sort everything out but that involves talking and my friends/family don't listen so then we go back to pretending to be ok and let everything build up. Also I feel annoyed about the fact that my friends come to me for help and advice and can't return the favour- when I need someone its tough.
    Well I can see behind the curtain the wheels are cranking turning its all wrong the way we're working.
    This has happened before- I've been betrayed by people that now I no longer bother with and I know that if it isn't sorted out we might all turn against eachother and the way everyones attempting to sort it out is wrong but its still hard to change that through mixed emotions.
    Towards a goal that's non existant its non existant but we just keep beliveing.
    This is where uncertainty comes in I have arguments with family and friends all the time and get over it and not because you set a goal. You don't think 'ill forgive mum by tuesday' you just do. So maybe if you just leave it this time the same thing will happen.
    I don't know if I got what I wanted to say across but I cba to read through it and I know I've spelt things wrong but if you're reading this thanks.

    The anti-god thing could make a lot of sense, but people can twist things so easily. I honestly think hayley is going to the concept of being broken. God's strength is made perfect through our weakness. I think the song does bring up doubt, which every christian has at certain times. I don't think my faith could be fully authentic if I didn't doubt god at one time and found more proof. But also, I think everything goes back to god when she talks about hitting the bottom.

    Here is the anti god explaination:.
    She's praying and scrapes her knees. It's like somthing bad happens in her life and a demon comes in which represents the bad thing. So she doubts god and wants to turn off her light. Because christians talk about the light as them beileving, like if you believe your letting your light shine. Then before it gets any better life gets worse and she thinks shes better off at the bottom cause shes like argh just give up forget god! That's when she hits bottom. And she talks about watching all the fake christians trying to play it. Like theyre all trying to look so good on the outside and when people look at them they think ohh they really have god, but they doubt him inside. And she says theyre all working toward a goal 'heaven' that's nonexistant, but they just keep beileving.

    I completely disagree with all of you. I am a believer but this is totally an anti-God song. No where does she have an optomistic view about having a relationship with God. She says she wants to get away from the light, that she wants to turn it all of because of her spite. How she watches people she used to look up to crumble, and realizes that they are all just doing things to do them (cranking, turning) and that it's pointless because they are trying to reach a nonexistent goal. At no point does she admit that she's relying on her own strength and not God's and that ultimately this life isn't about reaching perfection, it's about following God's commands and realizing that we will are a cursed people and it is only through our Savior that we will go to heaven.
    Seriously, just because it mentions God doesn't mean it's a God song. Listen to all of her other lyrics on the cd. It's all questioning God.

    Same. It has several meanings. 1 = the fact tht death is better than anything that life can offer 2= struggle in faith and belief in god. But I think personally that the main reason is to get the point across that life is just an object. I love the way that paramore do this with most of their songs. I've been a fan of theirs for a while. And I kow all the songs. I just can't wait to meet them again in december. Paramore rule!
    They are a agreat inspiration to me and my band (Y).
