I think it's about having a bright and happy person that really puts a smile on your face and if something bad happened in the future could you keep that person beside you ('if the darkness came tomorrow, could I keep you in my mind?). And he says that nothing will last forever and that person will leave your life at some point and alex compairs the person to the sun and how we all know that someday the sun will collapse in on itself and burn out('there's no point pretending that you won't burn out). But still this person is 'extraordinary' and a 'symbol, to all' that they meet so that is good and they should be happy now that they know them. I love this song!

Its about carrie omfg guise. She's obviously friend zoning him. Like, in her song "running through rivers", which is obviously about him she talks about how having a friend to share your adventures with is more important than "a prince who can charm. " but he obviously likes her. She's one of those people who is just always bright and bubbly and happy about everything. And here he's saying "i wish for your heart" but if I can't have it, i'll still be your friend "just for the chance to stand in your light. " I actually truly believe this. ~phoebe.

I don't think its about the girl he is in love with, or a crush or his "girlfriend" carrie according to the fangirls and tumblr (they can be best friends without anything like that between them). I believe it is about love through friendship, how he loves and truly appreciates all those who stick by him and that they really mean something to him. That is just how I interpret it.

I think it's about being glad to have a connection with someone who is bright and happy, and that they hope to always remember this person. It's also saying that this bright person, while no one lasts forever, has influenced the lives of everyone they have met for the better. In other words, it's about those relationships, friends or otherwise, that you never want to lose and you will always remember.
