Meaning
I think that this song is about how the American society is always leaning towards how people look and not who they actually are, or if they have any talent whatsoever. The line "and all the hotties on the hills just getting rich and making deals while you and me are watching TV" explains to me that maybe he's trying to say that because we might not be up to society's standards on how we should look, we are still sitting on the sofa watching television because society is idealist. Society has in turn turned us into idealists ourselves, and this song is basically ripping on the fact that if you want to be rich and famous and "go somewhere in life", you have to be society's version of beautiful, hot, whatever.
