The Bow Street Runners have been called London's first professional police force. The force originally numbered six men and was founded in 1749. Bow Street runners was the public's nickname for the officers, although the officers never referred to themselves as runners, considering the term to be derogatory.

A fictional character in Charles Dickens' novel Oliver Twist. In the preface to the novel, he is described as a "receiver of stolen goods". He is the leader of a group of children (the Artful Dodger and Charley Bates among them) whom he teaches to make their livings by pick pocketing and other criminal activities, in exchange for shelter.

this song is Fagin examining his life and seeing the different ways in which he could change but realising that after each option he finds a problem with it eg a wife taking his money, him not knowing anyone in high status who can help him and not wanting to start early and finish late for work for low pay
