Not The Band – Devil In Me lyrics
A town like this is bound to kill
Not all will last, but someone will
Survival all depends on who you are
I was born a spotless slate
But soon I found someone to hate
And never really had to look that far
I tried to keep my faith and trust
But people treated me like dust
So I dreamt up a world of love and light
I walked the walk and talked the talk
While trying to run down the clock
And for a while my life seemed quite alright
But even all your made-up friends
Are gonna leave you in the end
They say it’s just a part of growing up
You’ll wind up lonely, tense and scared
Clinging to a teddy bear
Or a hardly housetrained birthday pup
So for a while I turned to God
And learned what pleasures he’s outlawed
On Sundays I consumed his blood and flesh
But something seemed so out of place
Among our Lord’s amazing grace
And soon I felt the need for something fresh
I turned my back on guiding stars
To follow neon lights to bars
Tits and ass abound, and cash was king
God was just an astronaut
Whom every atheist has fought
No higher purpose ever meant a thing
Now all I did was beg and steal
Command and conquer, wheel and deal
We can’t be angels while we’re still alive
It’s easier to be a creep
But nightmares killed me in my sleep
Inside I felt a part of me die
The edge was close, I balanced on
I stumbled like a thief at dawn
But often it felt like a second birth
High and mighty, growing fast
I knew the feeling couldn’t last
And then the Moon came crashing to the Earth
A watchman guards a vault with gold
While devils taunt the mortal soul
Fooling him to leave his moral ground
He sneaks off from the beaten path
And stares back at the aftermath
Hypnotized by smells and sights and sounds
Naked, naked.. Free and torn
New is killed and old is born
Someone sees the sadness in your eyes
Say goodnight and say your prayers
This life is beyond repairs
Widows laugh; your body double cries
Not all will last, but someone will
Survival all depends on who you are
I was born a spotless slate
But soon I found someone to hate
And never really had to look that far
I tried to keep my faith and trust
But people treated me like dust
