Willie Nelson – My Heros Have Always Been Cowboys lyrics
I grew up a-dreamin' of bein' a cowboy,
And Lovin' the cowboy ways.
Pursuin' the life of my high-ridin' heroes,
I burned up my childhood days.
I learned of all the rules of the modern-day drifter,
Don't you hold on to nothin' too long.
Just take what you need from the ladies, then leave them,
With the words of a sad country song.
My heroes have always been cowboys.
And they still are, it seems.
Sadly, in search of, but one step in back of,
Themselves and their slow-movin' dreams.

Cowboys are special with their own brand of misery,
From being alone too long.
You could die from the cold in the arms of a nightman,
Knowin' well that your best days are gone.
Pickin' up hookers instead of my pen,
I let the words of my years fade away.
Old worn-out saddles, and 'old worn-out memories,
With no one and no place to stay.

My heroes have always been cowboys.
And they still are, it seems.
Sadly, in search of, but one step in back of,
Themselves and their slow-movin' dreams.

Sadly, in search of, but one step in back of,
Themselves and their slow-movin' dreams.

I truly believe "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys" is a song about a young kid, who grew up around Old Western Cowboys he must have heard of "The Old Cowboy way of Life" Let me yell you by experience, herding cattle isn't as easy as people think it is. Riding on horse back for days isn't easy either. In reference, to the line about the ladies. Well, you never really have time to settle down. When you were, or are a true cowboy. You don't have time to think about settling down, that's why it says, take from them what you need, then leave them alone. The last thing you want to do, if you re a cowboy is break a lady's heart. Sometimes. I wish, I was still herding cattle, it ain't easy moving 900 to 1, 000 lbs. Of beef from point A to point B, the days are long and the nights are fast. That's why. "My heroes... have always been Cowboys"

This song makes me think about my dad. Growing up all he wanted was to be a cowboy. Yes he lost his family along the way, but did realize his dream and became the foreman on a ranch in Florida with 2600 head of cattle! Oh and although he and my mother were never able to reunite we were. I joined him on that ranch and some of my happiest memories are there. He's no longer with us but I'm sure he's still riding the fence line in Heaven!

This song is about a dreamer not a cowboy. Someone who should have done the things he dreamed about. Now he is old and regretting spending all that time dreaming and not doing! Much of his life is behind him he wishes he would have Married. All he ends up with is his bag of empty dreams.

I think this song is really about the same kind of cowboys that "mommas, don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys" is--that is, truck drivers and guitar pickers--a key line is " pickin' up hookers instead of my pen i let the words of my youth slip away. " another is "i learned all the rules of the modern day drifter, don'tcha hold onto nothin' too long, but take what you need from the girls of the evening, with the words of a sad country song. "

This is a kid's eye view of a cowboy, perhaps nurtured by movies and such. But the kid never matures into a man; sidetracked by booze perhaps. So he adopts the look of an old cowboy and a life of worn out surroundings. You will see these guys in the "slums" of salt lake and billings and nashville. Perhaps they worked on a farm or helped make hay at small ranches, but they never became big-herd cowboys.
