Willie Nelson – September Song lyrics
Oh, it's a long, long while
From May to December
But the days grow short,
When you reach September.
When the autumn weather
Turn leaves to flame
One hasn't got time
For the waiting game.
Oh the days dwindle down
To a precious few. ..
September, November. ..
And these few precious days
I'll spend with you.
These precious days
I'll spend with you.
Oh the days dwindle down
To a precious few. ..
September, November. ..
And these few precious days
I'll spend with you.
These precious days
I'll spend with you.
These precious days
I'll spend with you

My boyfriend and I are in our early 80’s and desperately in love and make each other very happy. He is still married and I am a widow twice over. We have been seeing each other now for going on four years. This song has special meaning to me: we should be together as the days ARE growing short. The time we spend together is terribly short, while the week we spend apart feels like a year.

The central metaphor sees a person's life as the seasons of a year: in this case it is September, the autumn of life when 'the days grow short'. This song has great mening for me: my lover and I are in love, passionate, and in our seventies - in the terms of the song our days are dwindling. We haven't 'got time for the waiting game', so we will spend the 'precious days' together.

My wonderful wife and I not only understood the meaning in the lyrics we lived them. My wife died in 2009, we had been married for 58 years, 58 happy years. We were both 23 yoa when we first met and I proposed 3 weeks later. Grace contracted alzeimers disease and her last words to me were" i love you and always have". She died peacefully a couple of hours later. Our december had arrived.

I completely disagree with the "May/December romance" theory that was pisted bt an unregistered user on 10 September 2011. The reference made in this song - "a long, long while from May to December" speaks of the time from youth to one's "golden years." When you get towards to "autumn" of your lifespan, the "days grow short." It's a love song that speaks to realizing that we all have a finite number of precious days, and the singer meabs to spend their precious days with the one they love.

Willie Nelson. I lost my parents. Married in 1947, my father passed in 2005, my mother in 2008. She actually lived 3 years without him. My God, she was so sad and miserable in those years. She died of cancer. And I believe she wasn't too disappointed or saddened by the news of her diagnosis. I believe she felt that my baby sister (early 50's) in 2009, and I was in mid/late 50's at that year, we would be ok and she could leave and revisit w my father in the spiritual world. She just could not live without him for very long.

This was the song my father picked to play at my mom's funeral, they were high school sweethearts and had been married for 49 years. We lost my mom 8 years ago. My youngest son has since become a worship director at his church and once my dad heard him sing (we live 400 miles away from each other) he hasas asked him to sing this as we roll him out of the church as his will have finally reached his december and will be reuniting with my mom for eternity. This is so not about age difference but the full journey of ones life and the love they share with that one true love.
