I believe this song has to do with a man coming out as gay. He says, "Please believe me, this isn't easy", which means it isn't easy for him to tell everyone how he feels. This song is also sung toward someone (probably a man and a first love) who left him for a woman. When he says things like, "turn on those smoke machines/ magic and mystery", it alludes to the possibility that the man who left him lied. He also says, "you like to play pretend", which supports my previous claim that the first love lied to him. Yet a third thing that prove that the 'first love' lied is when he says, "I can't beleive your lies". We can also assume that the person singing this song was very in love with the liar and truly thought their love was real, saying things like 'we were like bottle rockets', "you were my only one" and "we were a fire burnin". He also said "you are just a lesson I'm learnin", which may mean that he is getting over his first love. He also says, "Now I know I have to stop it" which may mean that he had been trying to get the love to date him again.

It's about a person (man) who was in love with another man. This man happened to be his first love interest. Yet it didn't work out between them and he is experiencing heartbreak from this man's rejection.
He also appears to be left by this man for a woman. "She'll never know you like I do."

To me it's a powerful song because despite his rejection. He stays true to himself (gay) instead of questioning his own personal worth and debating on whether to switch teams.

It's also about letting go of he or she who has a hold on you (don't lie, we all have one) and realizing that you deserve better perhaps someone who knows what he or she wants especially on sexual orientation.

It's a song about coming out of the closet. Lyrics are powerful; knowing the person (him/herself) as they portrayed behind smoke machines for what "society" thinks is right. Losing your mind; to decide to live up to the "norm" or be true to thy oneself. It's throwing away a perceived image. Goodbye to pretending and loving your own self.
