Valdy – Peter And Lou lyrics
Peter and Lou would skate
On winter's frozen lake
Circling around all their friends
Laughing wherever they went.

They're catching the mornin' plane
And sendin' the rest by train,
Hangin' their skates on the wall
Takin' their turn and that's all

With brushes & canvas & macrome handcrafts & Bessie Smith singin' the blues...
A chorus for Peter & Lou.

Now loneliness has a way
Of hangin' around all day
I'm standing alone on the ice
I'm wonderin' if maybe they've been right

So I'll catch the mornin' plane
Send all the rest by train
Leavin' the ice there to thaw
I'm takin' my turn and that's all.

And if I should miss them, I'll go back & listen to Bessie Smith singin' the blues
In a chorus for Peter & Lou

Oh, if I should miss them, I'll go back & listen to Bessie Smith singin' the blues
In a chorus for Peter & Lou

This is about the joys of youth, and wanting to get back to them "some day". He watches others and remembers his childhood, so he reaches back too, in his memories. Play a Bessie Smith record, and skate with.
Valdy's songs are pretty well all about introspection(looking inward), and feelings of peace, love and happiness. The fact that he was long-haired, bearded, and living in the mountain backwoods in the early 70's doesn't make him a hippie. Does it? Oh. Yeah. I guess maybe.

Song was written by Craig Wood about his friends Peter and Lou Berryman when they had a sojourn in Canada during the Vietnam War.
Craig is an old psychedelic warrior (Papa in Papa Bear's Medicine Show) while Peter and Lou are well known folk music performers in the Wisconsin area.
Craig was so impressed with his friends' joie de vie and their pleasures in life that he wrote this song. And Valdy did a damn decent job of singing it.

I always thought the line was "peter and lou escaped... " we were living in the kootenays (doing "back to the land") and several of our friends has become bushed and had to 'get out'. I pictured them leaving on a beaver with skiis attached to the landing gear--taking off from the frozen lake just outside our front door. Winters could be lonely and cruel to wannabe bush-hippies. We left the following winter after listening to that song for 12 months.

I have liked this song since I was a teenager, (I'm now in my early 60s).
I know about the other song meanings and background, but I like to think of this song as a story about life, and growing up in a small town in Canada. Skating on frozen lakes during the winter.
I also think the song is about the migration from small and rural areas of Canada (and in many other places around the world), to large cities. The singer watches his friends decide to move away, and leave their small town, and their current lives behind (hanging the skates on the wall) but he decides to stay in the small town he grew up in. But 'loneliness has a way of hanging around all day' , and he finally decides that it is his turn to leave. But he knows he can always come back if he wants to. The small town of his youth will still be there, and waiting for him.

This song is about Peter Asher and Lou Adler. Valdys sings businessmen singing the blues not Bessie Smith. Valdy was on Sloth Records distributed by A&M. He eventually recorded most of his hits for A&M. He also recorded at least 1 album in LA st the same studios frequented by Peter Asher and Lou Adler.
