Terry Jacks – Seasons In The Sun lyrics
Goodbye to you
My trusted friend

We've known each other since we were nine or te
Together we've climbed hills and trees

Learned of love and A-B-C's

Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees.
Goodbye
My friend
It's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky;
Now that the spring is in the air

Pretty girls are ev'rywhere
Think of me and I'll be there.

We had joy
We had fun

We had seasons in the sun;
But the hills that we climbed
Were just seasons out of time.

Goodbye
Papa
Please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family;
You tried to teach me right from wrong

Too much wine and too much song

Wonder how I got along.
Goodbye
Papa
It's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky;
Now that the spring is in the air

Little children ev'rywhere
When you'll see them
I'll be there.

We had joy
We had fun

We had seasons in the sun;
But the wine and the song
Like the seasons have all gone
.

Goodbye
Michelle
My little one

You gave me love and helped me find the sun;
And ev'ry time that I was down
You would always come around
And get my feet back on the ground.
Goodbye
Michelle
It's hard to die

When all the birds are singing in the sky;

Now that the spring is in the air
With the flowers ev'rywhere;
I wish that we could both be there.

We had lives
We had fun

We had seasons in the sun;
But the stars we could reach
Were just star-fish on the beach.

    Well, all of a sudden, it may have a massive new significance to many of us. I'm sat at the end of my first week in isolation, looking out of the window at the sun shining (not had much of that for some months), and desperate to re-connect with loved ones, the great outdoors and my life. Hoping you get through the next few weeks safely.

    I think it was a young man, knowing that he was dying from a disease,
    he was reflecting on his childhood friendships, almost to the point of reliving them. He had great sorrow knowing that these days have passed him by. Michelle was a young girl who brought hope to his life. He felt that he didn't measure up to what his father thought that he should be.
    Which made him feel bad. Feels so sad to leave the people and beauty that he felt and seen around him, the children playing, the trees, the birds, even the flowers. He really didn't want to die, but knew that he was going to. And the stars were his own dreams bigger than life.

    This person is saying goodbye to all the people he loves and also says the death is not an easy thing go through. I think he is responsible for the way he is dying and that is why he is kind of suffering and regrating for the things he never did. The teaching is that we all must take advantage of our life and do what we ought to do to enjoy it. Mery, costa rica.

    Suicide letter of man suffering deep depression. He always felt out of time and pace with the world around him. With his best childhood friend, his father, and even with the one true light in his life, his daughter. She was the one person that could lift his deep depression and give him a reason to live. But now his life Is once again falling apart by his own hands and the separation from his daughter has him at the edge of a cliff. Even though everything in the world looks so bright and fresh to those around him he can no longer continue to live in his world of deep depression and is saying goodbye in this song.

    My guess is that since the song is dated circa 1974, he may have been a solider dying from wounds in Vietnam. He may have enlisted as a result of being the black sheep of the family and was not a person to go along with the family. Those wounds would also include heroin addiction/overdoses that many soldiers had suffered from. As a result of those wounds [?] he is preparing himself to die and saying goodbye the best way he can. What's interesting is that a lot of songs around this era centered around the effects of heroin addiction. Nights in white satin is another discussion.

    This song brings so much emotions to my life. When I hear it, it reminds me of my parents divorce but mostly my father never returning. It a song I'm sure they played but really not sure. I was 3 when he left so it was 1967. No matter where I am and if I hear this song it reminds me and calms me. It's a song to remember my dad. Thank you Denise Lewis.

    I know people will hate me for this, but I can see an entirely different interpretation of these lyrics. The singer isn't actually gonna die, he's killing all of these people. Reading through the lyrics carefully (which is how I stumbled on this page, I was searching for them) it fits. The usual interpretations also fit, I just had a morbid imagination after a local supermarket played it and it got stuck in my head all day.

    I have Requested this song to be played at my funeral... It has a VERY special Meaning to me as I have a daughter (Carolyn Michelle) whom I have not seen since she was Three years old. I have always made mention of her Birth as "I never knew what the sunshine was until she was born" >( You gave me love and helped me find the sun ) Not to mention that I was the black sheep of all black sheep in my family. It is a "Sad" song but with a VERY SPECIAL meaning of LOVE and Tenderness that will be in my Heart FOREVER.

    I believe that he may have been dying from cirrhosis of the liver because of the line to much wine which can cost this.maybe he turned into a alcoholic and was cast out by his family. He could have thinking back to when his life was more simpler. He may have felt guilty because of it.

    This is a sad and beautiful song. I think there can be a number of interpretations. Mine is, that he is on "Death Row" and is about to be executed. He is accepting of his fate and is remorseful for whatever he has done for him to be in this position and is reminiscing about his young love.

    During my childhood, our family faced a catastrophic event when my four aunts committed suicide. During my teenage years, this song helped me come to terms with their deaths & it has shaped my life forever more. Recently a young man played this lyric to me & I love him for it!

    During the time this song was made, it could be about dying of cancer, although many think of this as a suicide song. However in today's society, many will probably think of this as a song of someone dying of aids. I believe the meaning of the song is to condole a lost love through the fact that whoever is singing the song is already gone, but never forgotten, and telling everyone to remember the time the departed is going to live on in memories, yet soon you (the alive) will be there when the time comes. After writing the meaning, I was thinking that perhaps it may be about a death row inmate, yet I never looked at it that way.

    For years I thought this song was about dying because of the words "It's hard to die". The song was translated from Belgian and maybe something was lost through that process. I was very surprised to find out this song is actually about ending a love relationship and dying to that relationship. The words go on to say "Now that the spring is in the air, Pretty girls are everywhere, Think of me and I'll be there", so it does refer to going on and not actually dying.
    It's funny you think you know a thing and to find out later it is the exact opposite to what you thought it was.
