Placebo – Running Up That Hill lyrics
It doesn't hurt me
You want to feel how it feels
You want to know, know that it doesn't hurt me
You want to hear about the deal I'm making
You...
You and me

And if I only could
I'd make a deal with God
And I'd get him to swap our places
Be running up that road
Be running up that hill
Be running up that building

If I only could oh...

You don't want to hurt me
But see how deep the bullet lies
Unaware I'm tearing you asunder
Oh there is thunder in our hearts, baby
Is there so much hate for the ones we love
Tell me we both matter don't we
You...
You and me
You and me, you won't be unhappy

And if I only could
I'd make a deal with god
And I'd get him to swap our places
Be running up that road
Be running up that hill
Be running up that building

If I only could oh...

Come on baby, come on darling
Let me steal this moment from you now
Come on angel, come on, come on darling
Let's exchange the experience,
Oh...

And if I only could
I'd make a deal with God
And I'd get him to swap our places
Be running up that road
Be running up that hill
No problems...

And if I only could
I'd make a deal with God
And I'd get him to swap our places
Be running up that road
Be running up that hill
No problems...

If I only could, be running up that hill
If I only could, be running up that hill
If I only could, be running up that hill
If I only could, be running up that hill
If I only could, be running up that hill
If I only could, be running up that hill
If I only could, be running up that hill.

The song itself has often been misinterpreted. Bush herself has said,.
“ I was trying to say that, really, a man and a woman, can't understand each other because we are a man and a woman. And if we could actually swap each other's roles, if we could actually be in each other's place for a while, I think we'd both be very surprised! [laughs] and I think it would lead to a greater understanding. And really the only way I could think it could be done was either. You know, I thought a deal with the devil, you know. And I thought, 'well, no, why not a deal with god! ' you know, because in a way it's so much more powerful the whole idea of asking god to make a deal with you. You see, for me it is still called "deal with god", that was its title. But we were told that if we kept this title that it would not be played in any of the religious countries, italy wouldn't play it, france wouldn't play it, and australia wouldn't play it! Ireland wouldn't play it, and that generally we might get it blacked purely because it had god in the title.

It's about not understanding the other gender. Kate Bush made the song, wrote the lyrics, and etc, so you can simply click the Wikipedia for the song or browse for some interviews of her explaining her work. But the general scope of it is that you cannot truly understand the other sex without switching places with them and fully understanding them, and that can being people closer together because they'd finally understand.

This is song is about a love relationship. One lover is looking from the outside and is tragically realizing that their love is not going to work out. They are both being cruel to each even though they love each other. And yes, if the lover could trade places with God, she/he would do what it takes to make it happen. She/he'd be running up that hill/road/building no matter how difficult. Only God could provide the love they need to make this thing work.

When I first heard this song it reminded me of how much I love my kids and how I would do anything to have them be able to run up that hill again. This is a good example of music meaning different things to different people at different times in their life.

Thor and loki angst, right here. This.
Loki's jealous. His i-need-to-prove-myself, thor-please-pay-attention-to-me, thor-why-do-you-love-earth-more-than-me personality fits this song to a T. Its like thor and loki's whole life is planted around this song.
Loki was always the outcast, he never really fit in. Thor was the only one who loved him. Then, thor grew up, and left loki behind. He didn't mean to leave him, but nonetheless loki slowly grew apart from thor. He began to feel jealous towards his brother, and felt the need to prove he could manage on his own. Therefore, he got thor kicked out of asgard to prove himself to odin. It didn't work out. He wants to have thor's spot as the favourite son, the golden boy, the one who can take care of everything. But that's not how it works.
I listen to the placebo version, btw.

I think this song is about a man who wishe sto be with his love one even at the risk of giving up his loved one for it. There are apart for now and to get to her he has to go somewhere "running uo that hill". He wishes that she will be happy he says "you an dme we won't be unhappy". He also wantsto confirm or assure her that they both matter to each other. He loves her deeply and their separation hurts him an this tearing him asunder. I really like this song.

To me it's like one of the lovers in not of the same world, a star crossed lovers type. But they would do anything to be with that person to make everything right, even if doing so tears their own families apart. They are trying to tell their lover that it hurts them to see how this difference between him is hurting both of them. And that the only way to make it right it to "make a deal with god" kind the ultimate solution for them to be together. Sounds cheesy and cliche. But I think of the twilight sagas. Vampires, but in a tasteful passionate romantic kind of way. Not gory like most vampire stories/movies. It's beautiful in a immortal. Vampire way.

I feel it is a doomed love, one where it is one-sided= more of a koi- a japanese term for a desperate and selfish type of love. One party is trying to change the other to their liking with the sheer strength of their will, instead of accepting them as they are. There is a communication break-down and neither one can relate to the other but there is a desire to keep going on as is only for the domineering one to be dominated. The stress of it all is making one lash-out upon the other verbally, tearing one down to make them see the light so to speak.
