Burn The Ballroom – Whisper lyrics
Come in sit down sweet angel leave me all your tears
Tell me all of your troubles the weight of your short years
Love is only a river drowning all of your cheer
Sell me all of your laughter and I will take some of your fear
His favorite days were the mornings she came with confessions of cardinal
Sin
A beast in the business of selling forgiveness dead eyes on a treacherous
Grin
And he laps up the vice like a wolf in the night he’s the left hand of
God on the stage
And with one hand he offers salvation to lovers the other it taketh away

So give me your fire give me your fear give me your faith when love gives
You tears
Give me your heart give me your fate give me your hand when love gives you
Hate
Give me your prayers up on your feet and I’ll give you a show it helps
Fill the seats
So give me your sins give me your lies but whisper your love
And I’ll whisper mine

His favorite line was the one formed outside where they trade in
Confessions for lies
A beast in the business of selling forgiveness and buying salvation with
Wine
And he cries out to God how can you claim them all when I know that they
Are all mine

So give me your fire give me your fear give me your faith when love gives
You tears
Give me your heart give me your fate give me your hand when love gives you
Hate
Give me your prayers up on your feet and I’ll give you a show it helps
Fill the seats
So give me your sins give me your lies but whisper your love
And I’ll whisper mine

Come in sit down sweet angel and I will take some of your fear…

For me, I see the song as a complaint and comfort from the old methods of churches that focused on someone's life only when they payed them. I focus on how it says "he's the left hand of God in the stage", implying an act or scam for something in return.
In the chorus, the singer only asks for the other to give their despairs (fire, fear, hate) and how they will simply be with them, and may share theirs in return.
The second verse then calls out to how the devil seemingly envelopes these churches based off greed, and boasts to God, asking how they can be saved when the Devil practically holds over them.

Overall, I feel defiance and love from this song in the chorus. With the verses against fake priests, this conflicts by only asking to be given what is conveyed as sin, and to give love in return, even if it's hidden or "whispered".

I think this song is about how the Church used to “forgive” sins in return for a payment of money. The sin could be anything from theft to murder, but as long as suitable compensation was paid to the Church, the person would be free from all consequences and free to enter heaven.

The practice eventually got very out of hand, and it’s one of the major reasons that Martin Luther created his own branch of Christianity. The line, “A beast in the business of selling forgiveness” definitely gives me those vibes. Also, the general tone of the song makes it sound like a shady business deal. The lines about confession and sin, along with, “How can you claim them all?”, makes this song sound like it’s about a greedy priest who will forgive any sin that will make him rich.

I think this is from the perspective of Satan/The Devil, is hinted at by the fact he says "And he cries out to God how can you claim them all when I know that they
Are all mine" and his constant mentions of hate, fire, and souls. that is simply how I interpreted it. It's a song about Satan surveying his favourite charlatan, and speaking through him to better capture those who he is supposed to be helping. He offers them false platitudes and lies in exchange for what basically amounts to their souls, and their money of course. That is how I interpreted this.
