Blue Rose – Don't You Know (Ambushed) lyrics
[Verse]
Running hard, but my roads are spent
Moving like a bird with broken wings
Gypsy man got his eyes on me
Brother beaten bad last bar room night

[Chorus]
But everyday I've been looking for you, all around
But I can't find you
Every day when i look in your eyes, anyway
I can't help you
Don't you know, all the things you bring at night
Don't you know, it's just the way you hold me tight
Met with Joe in the backdoor light
Said he hadn't seen you in a while
Heard the raid by the gypsy band
Bound to happen some september night

[Chorus]
But everyday I've been looking for you, all around
But I can't find you
Every day when i look in your eyes, anyway
I can't help you
Don't you know, all the things you bring at night
Don't you know, it's just the way you hold me tight
When they came through the fog that night
Headlights shining fireflies at play
Round the bend by the old gas light
Ambushed we had scattered them to hell

[Chorus]
But everyday I've been looking for you, all around
But I can't find you
Every day when i look in your eyes, anyway
I can't help you
Don't you know, all the things you bring at night
Don't you know, it's just the way you hold me tight

A European look at Americana, done really well. Bar room brawls and country boys and the love of a woman informs the narrator's description of a rough town with some Very Bad Guys. Reminds me of the movie "Last Man Standing" with Bruce Willis; very 30's perspective created with modern tech. (Just two Italian guys with a couple of studio cats on this "concept" album.)

The narrator seems like an "outlaw" who crossed the wrong gang boss in a small town and they tried to ambush him and his brother--and got an unpleasant surprise when the two "scattered them to hell."

It feels like the narrator had run out of roads and decided to settle in a country town after meeting a girl. Could be that it was the gang boss's girl, could be that the Bad Guys just didn't want him messin' with "their" women. Maybe the brother stood up to them and got beat up pretty badly in the barroom as a result--and maybe the girl told them that the Bad Guys were planning to ambush them "through the fog that night."

Like I said, it sounds like the theme song to a period movie. Kudos to the two gents in Blue Rose who did such a crisp, evocative homage to a period in American history when things weren't so "civilized."
