Billy Connolly – Glasgow lyrics
Oh I was born in Glasgow, near the centre of the town,
I wouldd take you there and show you, but they've pulled the building down.
And when I think about it, it always makes me frown,
They bulldozed it all to make a road.

[Chorus:]

And that great old place I miss so much has seen much better days,
And still we talk about it as we go our separate ways.
Oh, but Glasgow gave me more than it ever took away,
And prepared me for life on the road.

[Repeat chorus]

My granny was a cleaner, my grandad drove a tram,
My father an engineer, made me all I am.
They have seen the city come and go, still they give a damn,
There's so much to learn along the road.

And Glasgow gave me more than it ever took away,
And prepared me for life on the road.

That's because it's a different fucking song, called "I wish I were in Glasgow", as opposed to "I belong to Glasgow". The one is a melancholic retrospective about the decline of a shipbuilding town. The other is a hilarious yet irrelevant rambling of a pissed guy at last orders somewhere on Bridge Street back when wife beating was funny.

I’m staggered Billy Connolly has ignored the simple original version of “I belong to Glasgow”.
I’m 85 years old next week and was born in Maryhill. The original version may have had more than the version I remember, Which is :-
I belong to Glasgow dear old Glasgow town (toon)
There’s something the matter with Glasgow as it’s going round and round (roond)
I’m only a common old working chap as anyone here can see
But when I’ve had a couple of drinks on a Saturday Glasgow belongs to me.

The original version of “I belong to to Glasgow” bears no relation to Billy Connolly’s version which must have been a figment of his imagination. I am 85 years old next week and the original words to the song are :-

I belong to Glasgow dear old Glasgow town
There’s something the matter with Glasgow cos it’s going round and round
I’m only a common old working chap as anyone here can see
But when I’ve had a couple of drinks on Saturday Glasgow belongs to Me.
