This guy, singing the song, is passionately, emotionally afflicted with feelings for this girl and there is just nothing he can do about it. He wonders if he actually went for what he wants,(which is, her, in a bold way)if his offer would be unrequited. He is at a time in his life when he feels he is ready to settle but he doubts if the circumstances would allow that.
He has another choice, another girl who does nothing but love him and would certainly make life easier but he is not passionate about her and he knows it.
The one he wants, she isn't there for him. Not in the way he wantsand he is exasperated with it all. But, damn it, he still wants her!
