"I knew this was a big mistake" may be the fact that they had such ambition to be rich and famous and they knew it would be a struggle to stay at the top ("If I listen close I can those singers/ voices in their body's coming through the radio") Then, it was a male dominated industry ("Union of the Snake"). It's all about male dominated competition.

I think it's about the rise to fame and losing your personal freedom. The demands of the record industry and expectations of the public. your life is exposed to the public (scandal in white on a tangled vine). I cook in an exposed kitchen. With the advent of the Food Network everybody thinks cooking is glamorous. The fact of the matter is that it is not for 99% of the industry. Sometimes you just want to find the darkest shadow you can find and hide in it!
