This song is about not just any father/son relationship, but it is about God and his child relationship. It is about the son, which is in fact every person on earth, who sins, and is too afraid of what the consequnces will be, so they run away. Running away, however, just makes everything they were trying to escape from catch up with them that much sooner. It also very discouaging: "the red extinguishes the hope that the green ignites". Their "mistakes" haunt them until they repent, confessing their sins to the only one who can really forgive and make their past be something that just makes them stronger. When they do, they see God's love, His unfathomable grace and his unconditional forgiveness. At that moment, their mistakes become stepping stones into a better and richer existence with Christ.
