Maybe I'm getting too old but I think everyone is looking too far into this. Maybe the speaker's mind is going back and forth in what he/she is thinking. Maybe the writer just picked certain words for their tangible qualities (they rhyme and sound well in the song). Even the best of writers (E A Poe) would spend entire nights thinking of the perfect word based on it's sound quality and how it looked in the writing. Their is also the musical aspect of "what sounds good with the melody". Remember its supposed to sound beautiful.
