I think this song has to do with maybe giving your life for another which is why he says he hopes his parents understand and he is happy with his choice. When says sometimes goodbye is a second chance he may mean giving up his life for a fellow countrymen may mean he gives another a second chance. Running in place may mean that he has seen others die but now he is going to do something to save someone which all soldiers have had happen, no soldier has been to a war without losing someone they know.
