This is a favourite song of Paul Kelly's for me. It's the story of a young man moving to the big city (Sydney - Kings Cross) and being caught up in the wonderment of it, but, over time, realising that the people there who he thought were his friends were actually rather superficial (fairweather friends - not there for you when you really need them), and he misses his home (Melbourne - St Kilda) even though it's not as shiny and glitzy (where the beach needs re-construction, where the palm trees have it hard). He'd give up the big glitzy city for the gritty place where his friends were really his friends. Fantastic song.
