The word citizen soldier actually refers to the term used in colonial times when the national guard was the only form of the american military. Farmers and normal citizens. The first name was minute men and they were used to fend off the british 1636 I do believe is when the actual first nation guard was formaly formed. And since then they have been known as The Army National Guard, or Citizen Soldiers as stated in this song. The National guard is what made all the other branches of the military so when the marines say they are the best and toughest well the latter part might be true but the best branch is truly the you.
