I think it means that a couple was once in love very much. And then something happened, and the couple is falling apart. Then both parties become in a "I don't care mode" and everything is very distant. The boy has become very hard to speak to, and it's like the only thing they can talk about is like small talk. She misses him, and she wants to know if he is hurting just as bad, but she can't find out. Soon she just gives up.
