A beautiful song and complex. Like good art the meaning is in the ear of the beholder, it means different things to different people. This is from the abstract school of lyrics. It seems to speak of the meaning of life and the responsibilities we all have; there is a road, no simple highway, you must go alone, make your own decisions and be responsible for them. But it also speaks of the goodness of humanity; if your cup be full may it be again and let there be music to fill the air. How fitting a lyric for the Grateful Dead. A great work of art in my opinion.

A beautiful, poetic song. There's a lot of imagery here, surrealism. I'm particularly touched by the positive message conveyed in lines such as "when I had no wings to fly, you flew to me,... you... flew to me." The melody fits the poetry of this song so well, I get goose bumps every time I hear it. The Grateful Dead surprised a lot of us when they sang such beautiful harmonies and were able to come up with such a deep and meaningful song. Unfortunately they weren't able to reproduce it live very well at all. A true work of art not known by many.

This song was standard fare in the early '60s folk circles. Neil Young stated that he loved this song growing up in Canada maybe in part because it was written and sung by Ian Tyson, also Canadian. A really sad song about a couple going their separate ways. He speaks of the wind and the seas, things that don't change and refers to his feelings of loneliness. He makes attempts to get back together but it doesn't sound hopeful. A beautiful but sad song.
