I have always thought this song was about a young woman living in poverty who has been taking care of her alcoholic father since a very young age falls in love with a young man and like many of us do, overlooks his flaws and faults. She is blinded by love and because he has what she considers a "fast car", he is a good, hard working man who has big dreams in life. In her eyes, she is ready to move on from being a caregiver and create a life of her own with someone who loves her. In reality, he is an alcoholic and is not looking for anything more than the next bottle. She dreams of the two of them flying away in his fast car but he has no desire to go anywhere. She gets a job working at the convenience store to earn money to move into something that is suitable for the family she wants to create with him. She never realizes that what she wants is not what he wants. He is not working or doing anything to better their lives and on the rare occasion that he spends time with her, it feels so good to have his arm around her and feel loved. At some point she realizes that all these dreams she had were hers alone and he is no different from her father. By the end of the song, she is ready for him to take his fast car and just keep on driving.
