I think his love eventually died when a competing man-interest runs a red light, and she is critically injured in the accident. Reaction from the community is strong, and on her behalf, in the media. Others fall for her, post-mortem, as the story is disseminated about the beautiful girl's accident. But he had a chance for her love during her life. Now, his time has run out, as her battle for life after the crash is lost, and she passes. Doctors were powerless and/or inept. The chance for love in this life is gone. Her memory is so strong in him, even as time passes, that he considers suicide, to join her and find the lost love. He should not go, but it's hard to rectify the fact that the driver still lives, and she is gone.
