This is a truly beautiful song and I think it can be taken anyone of those ways depending on the person.
I see it as losing a loved on in a sense and wanting nothing but for them to be back with you.
In my case, someone I really care for moved away and it hurts me every day that I can't be with him. And I want him to come home.
Like I said, a truly beautiful song.
