Brilliant song about ending a toxic friendship. The singer has decided it's time to "burn a bridge"; I. E. End the relationship; the "old wood creaking" suggests this ending is long overdue. He doesn't want to be the kind of guy who cuts people out, but "some people really suck" and "need to get the axing." One example of the type of friend who will ultimately "wear [you] out and lead [you] on" is the "drugstore cowgirl" who shirks all responsibility and lives life like a "butterfly in the wind without a care." the type of person who engages in reckless behavior because they are "so afraid of getting bored." I was going through a situation with a friend like that and as I listened to this song, it suddenly all made sense.
