I am an American and have lived in Norway for many years. The following is an alternative translation to A Child Is Born in Bethlehem I believe it is much better and is close to the famous version by the Danish theologian N. F. S. Grundtvig which has become probably the most loved Christmas carol in Scandinavia. A Child is Born in Bethlehem A child is born in Bethlehem, in Bethlehem Break forth in joy Jerusalem! Hallelujah, Hallelujah A lowly virgin meek and mild, so meek and mild Brought forth to us the Holy Child. Hallelujah, Hallelujah She laid Him in a manger bare, a manger bare While angels' voices filled the air. Hallelujah, Hallelujah There ox and ass beside Him stood, beside Him stood And saw their God and Master good.* Hallelujah, Hallelujah Three wise men came the Child they sought, the Child they sought. Gold, frankincense, and myrrh they brought. Hallelujah, Hallelujah Now ends the time of our forlorn, of our forlorn To us, a Savior now is born. Hallelujah, Hallelujah To You, all praise eternally, eternally The Holy, Blessed Trinity. Hallelujah, Hallelujah This is my original translation and is very close to Grundvig's. If you are interested in using it, please contact me: L. D. Wenzel at wenzel.ld@gmail.com I have translated another Grudvig Christmas Carol, if you are interested.
