This is a beautiful song with deeply emotional words. Many people will identify with the message and subtleties of its poetry. I am familiar with is the Dusty Springfield cover, though many other artists have recorded their versions. Just out of interest, I think the last stanza, line 5 should end with the word 'dawn' not 'dog'. The line should read 'I'd have been the shadow of your dawn'.
