I think the meaning is clearer in the Crow/Sting Version. A second try at a relationship, that doesn't work out, and for whatever reason he is the one to blame.
Even though she's boxed up her memories, she still thinks about him now and then. They loved each other once and they gave it another try, but his demons made him run again. Afraid to hear she loves him. And she's the one that really can't let go always left wondering why and the elusive answer to the question of how to make love stay. Wondering why he always leaves when she is and has always been. By his side. Just 98 cents worth of my 2 cents worth.
