I think the lyrics are religious in nature, and Christian in origin. First he says, "I'm sorry for everything", acknowledging that he's made mistakes. He asks, "Am I out of touch? Am I out of place?" because in this world you're not supposed to be sorry for being born the way you are. But he is sorry, because he's taking responsibility for his own actions. Next he says, "I'm going to mess this up... Over and over and over again.", acknowledging that he's powerless to be the person he wants to be. Then he says, "From the second that I was born it seems I had a loaded gun, And then I shot, shot, shot a hole through everything I loved". Here he's acknowledging that his sins have caused harm to his own personal self interests, and they really haven't benefited himself either. Then he says, "In the mean time, we let it go". It's an interesting choice of words. I wonder if he was aware that the original word in the bible in the ancient (Koine) Greek for "forgive" was actually heard by the speakers of the day as "let go", or "let it go". It seems he's invoking a sense of forgiveness, letting go of what he can't make fully right in the meantime. Next he says, "Cause you've always got to change your mind". Changing your mind is another interesting phrase. At the heart of what it means to "repent" is the notion that you're being asked to think differently, and in effect, change your mind. To say you've got to change your mind is to say you need to repent from what you've done. And lastly he asks, "Oh love, can you hear me? Oh let it drift away". He's asking if you're truly hearing what he's saying, and he's calling you to let it go, (perhaps to forgive), to let it drift away. I don't know if this is all of what he intended this to mean, but if it is at all, it's an excellent piece of work.
