This is song is from the musical Les Miserables which takes place in France 1813-1832, and the scene features characters Jean Valjean and Fantine. The year is 1822 and Fantine is very ill and very close to death. At the beginning of the song, she is hallucinating that she is with her daughter Cosette (who is in the "care" of the greedy Thernadiers since Fantine is a single mother). Valjean notices that since Fantine is hallucinating about Cosette then she must be close to death. He, being a very devout Catholic, blesses her soul for God telling her to "be at peace evermore". Fantine notices that Cosette is gone (though she was never there in the first place) saying "My Cosette..." Valjean promises to find and take care of the little girl and Fantine gives him custody of her. She thanks Vlajean for his kindness ("you come from God in Heaven"). She knows that her time is up and asks Valjean to stay with her until she passes so she won't be alone. She tells him to tell Cosette that she loves her and she'll see her again in Heaven. And while singing the lyric "when I wake..." She passes and her stuffing is over.
