"
I have fallen in love
With the same woman three times;
In a day spanning 19 years
Of tearful joys and joyful tears
The song was originally a love poem written by Sen. Ninoy Aquino for his wife, who would later become president of the Philippines after the EDSA Revolution. The first line, "a day spanning 19 years" was about their marriage in 1953. The second stanza is about their individual lives, he as a senator of the country while her as a housewife. The line "18 years and a day, till I was detained, forced in prison to stay" was about the hard reality during Martial Law, where he was detained as a political prisoner. The author would later die in 1983 at the tarmac of the Manila International Airport.
