The song is probably a reference to the destruction of Pompei and Herculaneum by pyroclastic flows from Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE. The last verse is pretty convincing. Also, the reference to Lares shrine makes it certain this is about Ancient Rome, and you can visit the ruins of the old shrine, which has been excavated.
Great song, of course.
