2 me this song would mean that when you would fall in love with some that has been going though the same thing as you have, you both will fight for each other and won't give up untill both of you are happy and left alone. And the part with knives and pens is that like you will write them a promise on a piece of paper then you also wont mind writing that same promise onto yourself using a knife or something.
