I always thought he was saying "you don't get a 'time' like this for nothing" - like talking about their time together or the best time of their lives. And I always thought it was "anyone would think you were 'hard up' too" because his friend has everything he/she needs. And I think this song is about how much this person misses his friend, like he's always on the go because of his job and needs his friend to ground him because their friendship is the best thing they have in their lives and he has faith that it's also the best thing in his friend's life as well, so it's like "What's up? Why aren't you around more, I thought we had something going? I need you, what we have is special, why are you MIA? Like, it could be so much better and awesome if you would just let it happen like it's supposed to."
