I'll take a nearly-literal interpretation. His girlfriend died, he almost commits suicide. When he sees the afterlife it is near-utopian but he feels out of place. He feels that it's right to live his life first.
He might be a somewhat bad person right now. He is still rewarded with the same afterlife but it doesn't feel right to him because it clashes with his currently dark personality. He wants to be a better person not because of the threat of hell, but because it will let him fit better in heaven. I'm getting that from the 2nd last chunk. It seems that in the song, whoever you are in life is who you are in the afterlife, and you cannot change while there ("Unbreak me, unchain me, I need another chance to live").
