Well Charybdis was a monster that created a whirlpool. Obviously the whole song is linked to the Odyssey(Which contains a chapter of the same name) and much of the song is linked closley in its themes like triumphing over the odds. The whole point of Scylla and Charybdis was that you could cross the whrilpool but it meant almost certain death for everyone. On the other hand you could pass Scylla but this would mean multiple members of your crew would be eaten but the rest would survive. Hence "Torn between death and doom".
