I don't get the exact meaning of "examine". I can't find the verb it comes from. Is it the ablative ... "in the ..... of death" ... and being a 'foretaste' suggests not so much a test ... an examination ... but a opening up ... a finding something ... like when examination means to look intently to find something ... the "ex" suggests 'out of' like 'finding out something'... ???
