Someone told me back then (1968-1969) that the song was about a woman having an abortion, or who had an abortion; hence, the cake (arguably a thing of beauty) that was left out in the rain is ruined, or lost. It seemed to make sense. But I was only 9 years old when the song came out, so who the hell knows what it means.
