He leaves for war and "A love back home unfolds" between his love and another person. He dies in battle and asks her why she "lets him go" This either means why did she let him go to war or why did she let their relationship and him die after he left. She kills herself and they are both burried on Violet Hill where they "sat in snow"
Or she is still in America and they both die. Him in war and her out of misery right after he left. He never hears that she loves him because she never sends letters due to her death. At the end he takes his love to a cemetary and "she was silent still" they sat in the snow, meaning they were dead.
