This song is actually about Satan, or the "Angel of Light". He is the one that the bible describe as being one of the angels that was so beautiful that angels bowed before him; yet so vain, and wanting to take the throne from God, he was thrown down to Earth. Hence the part talking about the "crash". The "children" left behind are actually the angels that lament his fate.
