I think it's about a girl who saw how bad her parents' relationship was and so she swore to herself she'd never allow herself to fall in love, but then she met a guy who she couldn't help falling for so he was the "only exception" to the oath she made to herself never to fall in love. The rest of the song is about her hoping that it all ends well, and that the good she experienced was real.
