I think that the song is a love story. At the beginning, it talks about the slow start to him falling in love, mostly because of all that left him heartbroken. He already knows what he's getting himself into, but does it nonetheless (perhaps even to get over an old flame?). Into the relationship, he knows it's killing him, how much he sacrifices for her, so much that he's not himself anymore. (or perhaps how it's not the same and he realizes how much he wants his ex back?)
