This song is so tragic. I'm gonna guess that meaning to it is that he was with someone who he thought he had forever, and it was etched in his heart. But then the woman left him. He was left with unanswered questions (Hence why there is some questions within the song). Also I think he is telling her how much she meant and wanting to know why it had to end.
