It's not about a girl it's for his mum, she died, and martin johnson is saying that he'll see her again, up in the stars, that's where he thinks she is.
"So I'm following the road to where you are, (meet you tonight on top of), the streetlights they will guide me to the stars, that's where you are"
If you know who the song is for it makes more sense, because, once I knew the song was for his mum the lyrics made so much more sense.
