I believe it's the girl who does not love him. He is offended by what she says to him. So he decides to leave. And vindictively attacks her. Most likely he didn't think it was an empty love(Or it was just a last straw kind of thing.). At the end he regrets leaving what he had. So it's kind of like, it's better to be with someone who doesn't love you. Than to be with no one at all.
