I heard this the first time and I thought it was so beautiful and romantic. But I've only recently looked at the lyrics that I previously ignored - its quiet dark this song, and the music and the instruments used camouflage its depth and darkness.
I tried imagining this as about a couple, but I couldn't make sense of it. To love someone so much that you'd destroy yourself completely. I could only think of a mother doing that for her child. So to me this is a mother singing to her child.
Genius in a strange, beautiful way.

It's reminiscent of the food she would cook him, but it also describes her heart and herself. She put herself through 'battered' - which could be another word for beatings, braised, grilled and sautéed - represents flames/ heat so essentially she's suffered extreme pain for him.
