I think this song is about our soldiers fighting overseas: "a million miles away", friends and family praying "heads bowed to bring us safely home". It's a song of hope: they are not alone, even surrounded by darkness they are protected by God, a "light that never dims and love that never dies."
It could also apply to Christians in general, fighting sin and Satan. Don't give up, keep your chin up because you are a child of the Almighty and He always wins.
